Dr. Misty

Q:  Now that the weather is finally warming up, I am interested in beginning some type of exercise routine, but I don’t know where to begin.  At 63 years old, I am about thirty pounds over-weight, and I know that being more active will help me get back in shape. Unfortunately, my arthritis and bad knees always seem to give me great reasons to put exercising off for another day.  Do you have any suggestions for me, Dr. Misty?  –Mona K., Cape Coral

A:  Mona, let me start off by giving you the standard disclaimer that I am sure you have heard a few hundred times:  Before beginning any new exercise program please consult with your primary care physician.  That being said, here is my advice for you:  GET MOVING.  When making the decision to begin an exercise routine, it requires a change in mindset.  You must make a mental habit of choosing ways to become a “naturally active” person.  A naturally active person is someone who chooses NOT to take the closest parking spot to the door, and instead walks the extra twenty feet to the building.  A naturally active person chooses NOT to take the golf cart to the pool when they could walk instead.  These deceptively minor choices in lifestyle will help you reach your goal of better health.

You may be thinking, “But what about my arthritis and bad knees?”  We all have different limitations that affect our activity levels.  It is up to you (and your doctor) to determine YOUR limitations, and work within those parameters.  The easiest way to bypass joint related issues is to remove gravity from the equation and get in the pool.  Whether it is a structured water aerobics class, or you by yourself swimming and moving around, pool activities are a fun, easy way to incorporate exercise into your weekly routine.  Grab a swimming noodle and get moving!
