When local meteorologist Jim Reif moved to Lee County he went from forecasting snowstorms and blizzards to tropical storms and hurricanes. Reif brings over a quarter of a century experience as a professional meteorologist and has been a major force in Florida weather forecasting for 30 plus years. Reif, one of Lee Countys’ most recognizable on air personalities moved here from Cherry Hill, New Jersey in 1979. “I’ve always loved the warm tropical weather southwest Florida.offers”, says Reif. A Penn State alumni, Reif majored in synoptic meteorology. His route to and from school took him by the local airport where he was friendly with the weather guys. “They would always give me maps and I would study them”. Reif still finds time to get back for a Nittany Lions football game every year or so. His mother, an active 90 year old who lives on the East Coast of the state pointed him in the right direction. “We would always watch the weather together when I was a child. I was very interested in the tropical storms and hurricanes that came close to us in New Jersey”, says Reif. Jim20Reif joined Waterman broadcasting in 1999 as Chief Meteorologist for ABC-7. More recently he became the Director of Meteorology for the company’s television stations. Reif loves the changes technology has brought about to the industry. “We have the best advances in forecasting hurricanes. The satellite imagery is all ready to go, it’s easily at your fingertips”, says Reif. “Audiences are more sophisticated. They are far more in touch than they were 30 years ago. And although there are weather challenges no matter where you live in the world, part of it is living in a state that gets hit more often than any other state”. |

Most seniors in Southwest Florida know his name. Best known for his vast experience in joint replacement and arthroscopic knee and shoulder work, Dr.John Kagan is also known for his commitment to his patients and his easy going manner. "Some people may say it's hard work and long hours and with at least 1500 surgeries a year, it may seem like that. But for me, it's not work," stressed Kagan. Dr. Kagan's typical workday starts at 7:15 a.m. His surgeries are scheduled until one or two in the afternoon. Office hours are usually from 1:30 to 8 p.m. in the office and then Dr. Kagan starts his rounds at area hospitals. Albeit a hectic schedule for most, it's one that Dr.Kagan thrives on. |

Dear Savvy Senior, What resources are available that can help me research some doctors in my area? I'm looking for a new primary care doctor for my mother and an orthopedic doctor for me, but I could use some help. Hunting for Doc's Dear Hunting Over the years, most people looking for a new doctor have turned to friends, family members, coworkers or doctors they already know for a recommendation. Or many simply pick a physician from their health plan who happens to be nearby, and hope for the best. But today, a growing number of resources are available that can help patients find the best medical care possible. Here's what you should know. |

Like most of you, I sometimes become
disenchanted with politics and on occasion have thrown up my hands in contempt
and mouthed those words we all use sometimes: “I don’t think I’ll even bother to
vote this time!” My flippant outbursts are just that. I do intend to vote and
urge everyone who has decided to stay home this time to go to the poles no
matter how frustrated you may be. Ladies this plea especially applies to you,
please don’t ever pass up your opportunity to vote

Dear Savvy Senior Where do the presidential candidates stand on Social Security and Medicare? I'll be eligible for these programs in a few years and haven't been able to find anything on their positions. Senior Voter Dear Voter You would think that Social Security and Medicare,20the=2 0government's huge entitlement programs that affect the pocketbooks of nearly every single voting American – either in taxes paid or benefits received – would get significant attention on the campaign trail. But that's not the case this year. |

The winter months find my wife, Susie and I seeking out warmer weather. We are not real enamored of the cold anymore so when the snow starts flying, we head south. If you’re thinking that sounds like a great life, you’re right. It is and all you have to do to enjoy it to get rich or grow old. In our case, we’re in the second category. We’re not going to Florida like so many Hoosiers do this year. Instead, our travels this winter are taking us to Southwest Texas where we plan to volunteer at a National Wildlife Refuge in the Rio Grande Valley. |

Written by Rosemarie Hurley

As Baby Boomers grapple with how to provide at-home or facility care for their parents, many are seeing the how financially devastating it can be. This is prompting a growing number of Boomers to look into Long-Term Care insurance for their own future needs. And there’s good news….it is so much more affordable to consider this when you are younger and relatively healthier. Long-Term Care planning is usually a very emotional issue, but the fact is that it is a very economic issue for most families. Talking about this and taking proactive steps is absolutely the way to go. When something happens, an injury or illness, have a plan makes it so much easier for non-effected spouse or family members. |

The Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center is pleased to offer a Safety Program for Alzheimer’s caregivers in Lee County. The Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center’s Safety Program was created to provide caregivers with tools to implement an emergency plan to prevent crises. Each Safety Program packet includes two components: 1) an emergency plan kit and 2) an identification bracelet for the memory impaired person. The emergency plan kit is intended to help eliminate the possibility of a crisis situation if the caregiver of a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder requires emergency care. The emergency workers who come to rescue the caregiver may not know a memory impaired adult resides in the home, and therefore, may leave the person with Alzheimer’s alone when they take the caregiver to the hospital. |

Mix it Up |

Take a look around your home. See a lot of solids, patterns or an equal mix of both? If the majority of what you see is solids, then you either really like solids or you doubt your ability to mix patterns and avoid using them. If the latter describes you, don't despair. With a little know-how, you can use more patterns in your décor and mix them up with good results.
When it comes to decorating with patterns, some of us are savvier than others. Companies know that, which is why so many produce coordinated fabrics and wallcoverings. These often include two or more complementary patterns and work well for people who can't or don't want to try mixing patterns themselves. |
