A Catfish out of Water Print E-mail
Written by Gordon Grindstaf
The winter months find my wife, Susie and I seeking out warmer weather. We are not real enamored of the cold anymore so when the snow starts flying, we head south. If you’re thinking that sounds like a great life, you’re right. It is and all you have to do to enjoy it to get rich or grow old. In our case,  we’re in the second category.
We’re not going to Florida like so many Hoosiers do this year. Instead, our travels this winter are taking us to Southwest Texas where we plan to volunteer at a National Wildlife Refuge in the Rio Grande Valley.

Long-Term Care Insurance – A Baby Boomer Concern of the Heart Print E-mail
Written by Rosemarie Hurley
As Baby Boomers grapple with how to provide at-home or facility care for their parents, many are seeing the how financially devastating it can be.  This is prompting a growing number of Boomers to look into Long-Term Care insurance for their own future needs.    And there’s good news….it is so much more affordable to consider this when you are younger and relatively healthier.

Long-Term Care planning is usually a very emotional issue, but the fact is that it is a very economic issue for most families.  Talking about this and taking proactive steps is absolutely the way to go.  When something happens, an injury or illness, have a plan makes it so much easier for non-effected spouse or family members.

Safety Program for Alzheimer's Print E-mail
Contributed by Editor
The Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center is pleased to offer a Safety Program for Alzheimer’s caregivers in Lee County.  The Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center’s Safety Program was created to provide caregivers with tools to implement an emergency plan to prevent crises.  Each Safety Program packet includes two components: 1) an emergency plan kit and 2) an identification bracelet for the memory impaired person.
The emergency plan kit is intended to help eliminate the possibility of a crisis situation if the caregiver of a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder requires emergency care.  The emergency workers who come to rescue the caregiver may not know a memory impaired adult resides in the home, and therefore, may leave the person with Alzheimer’s alone when they take the caregiver to the hospital.

Mix it Up Print E-mail
Written by Tresa Erickson
Take a look around your home. See a lot of solids, patterns or an equal mix of both? If the majority of what you see is solids, then you either really like solids or you doubt your ability to mix patterns and avoid using them. If the latter describes you, don't despair. With a little know-how, you can use more patterns in your décor and mix them up with good results.

When it comes to decorating with patterns, some of us are savvier than others. Companies know that, which is why so many produce coordinated fabrics and wallcoverings. These often include two or more complementary patterns and work well for people who can't or don't want to try mixing patterns themselves.

Americana At Its Best Print E-mail
Written by Tresa Erickson
You like to shop at flea markets, and as you walk through the booths on weekends, you find yourself drawn to objects that reflect a sense of patriotism. Sometimes, it's something small like a red, white and blue pot, while at other times it's something large like an old flag. You love all things Americana and would like to decorate one of the rooms in your home in that style.

Americana style is extremely versatile. The traditional theme is patriotic in nature and incorporates the colors of red, white and blue. Other themes may reflect a time in American life like the 1950s or a particular location like the New Jersey seaboard and feature colors relating to that.

John's Birthday Print E-mail
Written by Gordon Grindstaf
The pains were 3 minutes apart and the weather was terrible. Snow on the ground had never been unusual in December so it was not unexpected but we sure didn’t need it on this day. My wife, Susie, was on the telephone with her mother describing the pains and I was pacing the floor because I didn’t have anything else to do. Everything was done.

Dear Savvy Senior
When I had a heart attack last year my doctor told me to take extra precaution during the winter months because my risks of having another one could increase. Is this true? How can the seasons of the year affect your heart?
Old Man Winter

Dollar Stretchers Print E-mail

We are in the process of selling our home and moving to another country. Our university age children will be the recipients of many of our things, but we still find ourselves with a lot of things to dispose of. It makes us wonder why we bought some of these things in the first place. My husband sent seven large garbage bags full of clothing to the thrift store. We had a whole pickup truck loaded high with items for the thrift store and another load for the dump. I have boxes of china to send to consignment, a piano that no one wants, and numerous trinkets that seemed necessary at the time.

Aging Baby Boomers..60 the new 40? Print E-mail
Written by Rosemarie Hurley
One of the largest challenges facing America in the 21st. century will be the aging of the “baby boomers’.  This generation, those born between 1946 and 1964, represents a large segment of the population today. With the latest medical technologies and surgeries being taken advantage of, this group is growing old very gracefully.   This generation has always dramatically affected societal trends and demand for services.  As these folks reach retirement and beyond, they will continue to dominate the housing and labor markets.  As the ‘boomers’ save for retirement, the stock market has been reaching record highs.
